Visiting An A&E department - Do You Need To Go ?

An A&E department (also known as emergency department or casualty) deals with genuine life-threatening emergencies, such as:
·         loss of consciousness
·         acute confused state and fits that are not stopping
·         persistent, severe chest pain
·         breathing difficulties
·         severe bleeding that cannot be stopped
·         severe allergic reactions
·         severe burns or scalds
Less severe injuries can be treated in urgent care centres or minor injuries units (MIUs). An A&E is not an alternative to a GP appointment. If your GP practice is closed you can call NHS 111, which will direct you to the best local service to treat your injury. Alternatively, you can visit an NHS walk-in centre (WIC), which will also treat minor illnesses without an appointment.

Reintroduction of the MOD Education Support Fund (ESF)

In light of the ongoing drawdown from Germany and to provide time for the educational authorities across the UK to bring in longer-term provision for Service children as necessary, the Secretary of State for Defence on 24 July 2018 announced the extension of the ESF, on a limited basis, for an additional two years. The fund will consist of £3 million in 2018/19 and £2 million in 2019/20.

The ESF is open to publicly funded schools, Academies and Free Schools in the UK attended by Service children whose parents are subject to exceptional mobility and/or deployment. Applications from Local Authorities in support of these schools can also be accepted.

Directorate Children and Young People (DCYP), which is the MOD’s professional focal point for all matters relating to children and young people associated with the armed forces, are the lead organisation administering and supporting the fund.

DCYP will release further information on the next funding round shortly, but in the meantime Service parents are encouraged to raise awareness of the ESF at their child’s school.

Contact: DCYP-MOD-ESF-Mailbox@mod.gov.uk.

The InDependent Spouse

Jess Sands is no stranger to the challenges of starting a business. A few years ago, she was a successful full-time graphic designer, with a portfolio including Disney, Caroline Gardner and Marks & Spencer. But when she met her future husband, a pilot in the RAF, everything changed. Moving house every two years meant that Jess had to give up the career that she loved. After a year struggling to get employment in a market that is often reluctant to hire military spouses due to their transitory nature, Jess decided to develop her own business Design Jessica. Since then she has gone from strength to strength.
Jess is passionate about helping other military spouses through the same difficult transition that she made. Her business specialises in designing logos for new companies being set up by spouses, and as a founder of the Forces Enterprise Network Business Community, she encourages others in similar situations to share their experiences and challenges, helping them to help themselves. Now she has a new project aiming to give a voice to those who are already achieving amazing things, and to inspire those who dream of doing the same. The InDependent Spouse is a series of fun, informative weekly podcasts which explores the world of running a business by chatting to inspiring military entrepreneurs. Aimed at enterprising military spouses, the first series sees Jess interview such luminaries as Heledd Kendrick (Recruit for Spouses), Peter Mountford (Heropreneurs & the Veterans’ Foundation) and Natalie Trezise (Your Home Patch). Each episode is full of useful tips and amusing anecdotes, many of which will be familiar to those trying to create their own successful businesses while living the ‘magnolia wall life’. The first series of the InDependent Spouse is available now on iTunes. Jess is currently selecting for guests for Series 2. So, whether you are a military spouse starting out in business or are already running a successful company, if you want to share your story and inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs, you can get in touch with Jess at hello@theindependentspouse.co.uk

RBL: Important Announcement Regarding Family Holiday Breaks

We are no longer accepting new applications for the family holiday service.

We recently suspended taking applications for holiday parks, but have not experienced a significant reduction in the number of applications that we're receiving. As we have a backlog of over 2,000 applications we will continue to place bookings for those who have already applied, prioritising first-time applicants.

We are awaiting the results of the comprehensive independent evaluation of Legion Break Services, conducted by Liverpool John Moores University, which will be published in September, to inform our strategy for the delivery of family holidays going forward.

Step into Health

Step into Health is open to all Service Leavers and veterans, their spouses and dependents. It is an incredible opportunity in which employers from the NHS are working with the Armed Forces community to provide career and development opportunities. Whether you are interested in catering, maintenance, administration, finance, communications, management, or a role in one of the clinical services, this programme will benefit you.

The NHS is keen to invite you to explore your transferable skills and the potential training and career opportunities available at the national Step into Health careers fair.

At Step into Health: Explore your future in the NHS, you will be able to:

  • Meet employers from across the NHS to discussion national opportunities.
  • Listen to a brief from the Health Careers team about opportunities in the NHS.
  • Receive job application guidance specific to the NHS from members of the NHS recruiting teams.
  • Receive advice about specific career paths in the NHS from members of the NHS recruiting teams.

Organisations from the charity sector which support the Armed Forces community will also be present to discuss the assistance they can offer to those who are looking for employment.

Because of similar values between the NHS and the Armed Forces and because of the desirable skills held by the Armed Forces community, many have found rewarding employment in the NHS which can be more compatible with a mobile lifestyle than other potential employment options.

Service Family Hot Topics - July 2018 - Partner Employment

The Army acknowledges that Service life may have an impact on the employment of family members and Partner Employment is one of the nine primary areas of activity considered in the Army Families Strategy.
The recently established Army Families Working Group will work with the chain of command, families, governmental and third sector organisations to address issues identified. Evaluation of research projects in Partner Employment being conducted at the moment will help to better identify where the issues are.
The link below to 'Service Family Hot Topics', July 2018 issue provides information on a number of ongoing initiatives which may be of assistance to those seeking employment or to change their employment.

MoD launches its first strategy to tackle domestic abuse

The Ministry of Defence has launched its first strategy to tackle domestic abuse within the Armed Forces and defence civilian communities. The strategy builds on existing work by the military in this area, such as providing specialist training to welfare staff, and will include the launch of a campaign to raise awareness across the Armed Forces and enhancing support for civilian staff.
The 'No Defence for Abuse' Strategy aims to partner with specialist organisations to help them understand the unique needs of the service community. It will also work to create a culture of safety and support for those experiencing domestic abuse and their children, taking steps to break down the invisible wall that can deter victims from asking for help.
